The Perro de Presa Canario (roughly translated as the “Canary Dog of Prey”) has a long and celebrated history working as a catch dog and guardian. They were brought to the Canary Islands centuries ago to guard farms. Over time they were developed into a large breed with high drive, courage, and keen intelligence. The popularity of the Presa Canario has faded, but the breed began restoration in the 1970s and is now sought after for its valuable working traits.
These dogs are very devoted to their masters but highly suspicious of strangers. They can be taught strict obedience with just a little patience, and once trained, follow commands with intense focus. Our Perro de Presa Canario puppies are often taught to be hog catch dogs and personal protection dogs, but are fine choices for other kinds of work as well.
While the Presa Canario requires a lot of responsibility to properly care for and train, they have proven invaluable for many generations on the Canary Islands. If you would like to have one for yourself, reach out to Lone Star Mastiffs today.
This breed makes an excellent hunting companion. The name literally means “Canary Dog of Prey”.
These dogs make excellent watch dogs because of their courage and fortitude. They will defend what is theirs at all costs.
This breed is very self-confident with an even temper. They make obedient and docile family members but are suspicious of strangers.
